Research Highlights:
Dr. Carmil Azran’s primary research focuses on how bariatric surgery affects oral drug pharmacokinetics in patients with obesity, with the goal of developing clinical guidelines for postoperative medication monitoring and adjustment. Her clinical experience has highlighted specific drug-related challenges through case reports—for example, the unpredictable absorption of methylphenidate following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which has sometimes required switching to non-oral delivery methods, and highly variable lamotrigine levels after one anastomosis gastric bypass, ranging from subtherapeutic to elevated levels. These cases underscore the importance of individualized therapeutic drug monitoring. Dr. Azran’s recent work also includes research on obesity medications, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, supported by a grant for a large-scale study in this area. Many of her publications contribute to national and international clinical guidelines aimed at supporting healthcare providers in managing patients with obesity and those who have undergone bariatric surgery.
